Discovering Microplastics: Research on Their Impact on the Environment and Human Health – a project carried out under the Erasmus+ programme in cooperation with Skedsmo Videregående Skole in Lillestrøm, Norway

In November 2025, the 6th Secondary School named after Adam Mickiewicz in Kraków began cooperation with Skedsmo Videregående Skole in Lillestrøm, Norway. We are carrying out a project entitled Discovering Microplastics: Research on Their Impact on the Environment and Human Health.

On February 24–26, 2026, the Explory Festival took place at the 6th Secondary School named after Adam Mickiewicz in Kraków. This annual science festival gives young people the opportunity to present their own projects. As part of the implementation of the Polish–Norwegian project, one of the themes of the event was microplastics. During the festival:

  1. A lecture titled “Plastic: Hero or Villain?” was delivered by Prof. Jadwiga Laska from the Department of Biomaterials and Composites, Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics, AGH University of Science and Technology.
  2. Two projects related to microplastics were presented: “Plastic Eaters: Can Algae Eat Plastic?” (by Milena Pikula, Valeria Serogina, and Estela-Hanna Ulianiuk from class 3M2) and “The Possibility of Using Ciliates to Remove Microplastics from the Environment” (by Emilia Makuch and Michalina Wolak from class 3E).
  3. An exhibition of posters prepared by students from class IB was held.

Our school aims at reaching the highest educational standards that match modern Europe. The teachers have a great need to improve their qualifications and competence, increase the level of quality of teaching and learning through the use of innovative teaching methods and IT tools. Implementing the aims of the project will increase the attractiveness of the
educational process, develop the competence of the staff leading to the employment of the highest educational standards. We would like to gain contacts with foreign partners for international cooperation. After the pandemic lockdown it is especially important for us to engage our students and motivate them to take an active part in an international cooperation.
Joining the program will not only broaden their horizons but prepare them to active EU citizenship.
