Italian Culture and Language Day – 11.01.2011
January 11 was a special day for Italian language lovers in our school. On that day, as every year, young enthusiasts of Italian culture gathered in the school hall to celebrate the Italian Culture Day.
We were honored by the presence of a wonderful guest – prof. Roman Sosnowski from the Institute of Romance Philology at the Jagiellonian University. In his lecture “In the circle of the Medici: sons of Lawrence the Magnificent”, he presented the history of the famous family that used to rule Florence and Tuscany. Apart from the events in the political life of the rulers, the professor also presented the adventures of the everyday life of the family.
After the lecture, Martyna Raczek from class 3c gave us her performance. Her phenomenal performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s aria “Vieni, vieni o mio diletto” made a great impression on us.
Then it was time for presentations prepared by Italian language students. Kaja Murzyn from class 2a2 took us on a trip to the capital of Italy, to Rome. It brought closer the history of the main monuments and less known places of the Eternal City. Another presentation was prepared for us by Gabriela Kasza from class 1b2, who talked about Italian holidays and traditions. We learned that for Italians the unlucky number is not 13 (as in Poland), but … 17! There was also information about art and Italian artists. I’m talking about a presentation by Karolina Kruźlak and Anna Galos from class 2e. There was also a presentation about coffee, which is a showpiece of Italy and the methods of its preparation, which were introduced to us by Gabriela Pietras from 1c. The last presentation showed the history of Italian cinematography over the years: “Old and contemporary Italian cinema” was introduced to us by Gabriela Wiśniewska and Konrad Kemski from class 2a1.
After a delicious meal – as you can guess it was Italian food, specifically cartocciata catanese from the city of Catania in Sicily – we were full of energy and we moved to the next point of the program. It was the Knowledge About Italy Competition conducted by prof. Paulina Leśniak. It required knowledge of the history, geography and culture of Italy, as well as the curiosities contained in previous presentations.
After the commission was able to check the results, the musical performance continued. The first performer was Gabriela Pietras, who played the song “Ti Amo” from the repertoire of Umbert Tozzi on the ukulele. Then it was time for the joint karaoke songs of Italian partisans “Bella Ciao”, accompanied by a guitar duo – Marcin Janis and Marceli Jędryka from 1d.
After many exciting attractions, it’s time to end the meeting. The prizes for the winners of the Competition and the co-authors of the meeting were presented by the Director, Iwona Fedan. After the solemn speech, the holiday unfortunately ended. Nevertheless, nice, warm memories like sunny Italy will stay with us for a long time.

International Mother Language Day

High school students: let us cultivate the language because it allows us to express ourselves
February 20, 2019
– Language is not only there to do something. He is the way of human existence – once said a well-known linguist prof. Jerzy Bralczyk. This is also the message from the Krakow Secondary School No. 6, which on Tuesday, February 19, organized the celebration of the International Mother Language Day. Every year, one of the oldest secondary schools in Krakow organizes meetings and debates reminding us that language not only serves a functional function, but is also a “seat” of culture and enriches the world of human experiences.

The community of Secondary School No. 6 joined the celebration of the International Mother Language Day for the fifth time. Krakow high school students reflected on the importance of the mother tongue for the development and survival of culture, on the way in which it shapes human imagination and sensitivity.
– Polish is a rich language, incl. incredibly rich lexically, the great authors of literature spoke in it. If we do not cultivate our language, very severe deficits will start to appear – says Prof. dr hab. Bogusław Dopart from the Department of the History of Literature, Enlightenment and Romanticism at the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University.
This year’s event was inaugurated by a lecture by prof. dr hab. Renata Przybylska, dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University. Then, reading lessons took place, during which young people interpreted selected texts of culture under the guidance of masters – excellent literary scholars from the Jagiellonian University and the Ignatianum Academy: dr hab. Małgorzata Sokalska, Dr. Marty Rusek, Dr. Natalia Michny, Dr. Józef Ruszar and dr. Tomasz Majkowski.
The aim of the project is to show young people a scientific view of literature and Polish language as factors enriching the world of human experiences, shaping their ideals, ethical sensitivity, imagination, feelings and thoughts.
The momentous event has been a traditional celebration of Secondary School No. 6 for four years, celebrated in cooperation with outstanding scientists and people of culture. Previous celebrations, attended by linguists and literary scholars, were appreciated by teachers and young people. They gathered not only students of the VI, V and IV high schools, but also students of junior high schools in Kraków. Young people learned about the richness of the written and spoken language and wondered about the role and place of Polish language and literature in the life of a contemporary Pole.
The International Mother Language Day falls on February 21 and was established by UNESCO in 1999. Its date commemorates the events in Bangladesh where, in 1952, five students from Dhaka University were killed in a demonstration demanding Bengali status as an official language. According to UNESCO, almost half of the world’s 6,000 languages are in danger of disappearing within 2-3 generations.
Report from the trip to Israel – 26.01-2.02.2019
On 26.01. – 02/02/2019 a group of VILO students together with the Director and Professor Kowalski took part in an international exchange with a school in Israel.
For four days, we enjoyed the hospitality of students from the school in Binyamin, thereby strengthening Polish-Jewish ties. During our stay in Israel, we had the opportunity to see beautiful cities, including: Jerusalem, the city of many religions, Bethlehem – the birthplace of Jesus, or Tel-Aviv, the cultural capital of Israel, as well as monuments dating back to the beginnings of Christian civilization, including the temple in Magdala from the time of Jesus , the ruins of Herod’s Castle in Masada and the Wailing Wall, which is the remains of the Temple of Solomon.
An interesting item on the agenda was the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Institute. In the huge and well-equipped museum, we could learn more about the fate of Jews during World War II, and listen to the stories of witnesses of these events.
After saying goodbye to our Israeli friends, we set off on our way to Bethlehem, where we spent the next three days. The city is located in Palestine, so during the trip we had the opportunity to get to know two completely separate cultures – Arab and Jewish, of which an important element was trying local dishes, e.g. fish St. Peter in Tiberias or drunk with hummus as an appetizer to every dish.
The trip enriched us culturally and allowed us to start international friendships that will surely bear fruit in the future.
