A trip to Ukraine as part of the Eastern Borderlands project – 05/09 – 09/09/2019
A group of young people from High School No. 6 on September 5 – September 9, 2019 was on a trip to Ukraine as part of the Eastern Borderlands project, subsidized by the Marshal’s Office of the Małopolska Region.
We visited Żółkiew, Lwów, Olesko, Podhorce, Poczajów, Krzemieniec, Zbaraż, Trembowla, Chocim, and Okopy św. Trinity, Kamieniec Podolski, Złoczów.
The trip to Ukraine took place from 5 to 9 September 2019. 44 students from the second and third grades of our high school and four tutors participated in it.
The gathering of participants took place in Krakow at Wawrzyńca Street. After crossing the border in Korczowa, the participants went towards Żółkiew, where they admired the Roman Catholic collegiate church of St. Wawrzyńca, directly related to the Grand Hetman of the Crown Stanisław Żółkiewski and indirectly to King Jan III Sobieski and his father Jakub. Other places visited were the castle from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the synagogue and the Dominican church. The group went from Żółkiew to Lviv to visit the Łyczakowski Cemetery and the Eaglets’ Cemetery. The participants of the trip stopped at the graves of distinguished Poles – for example, A. Grottger, M. Konopnicka, G. Zapolska, K. J. Ordon, S. Banach. While visiting the necropolises, students gave the Redoubts of Ordon A. Mickiewicz, Rota by M. Konopnicka, Orlątko by A. Oppman, they laid flowers and lit candles thoughtfully. They spent the first night at the Sonata Hotel in Lviv.
The second day was spent under the care of a Polish-born guide who started showing her city from the High Castle. In Lviv, next to the most important monuments (the Wallachian church, the Armenian cathedral, the Market Square, the Boim chapel, the Jesuit church, the Hetman’s Embankments, the Bernardine church), students could see the little-known statue of Nikifor, a monument dedicated to T. Shevchenko, they also had the opportunity to lay flowers at the monument of the patron saint Adam Mickiewicz’s 6th High School. The walk around the most beautiful part of the city was graced with sightseeing and the presence at the rehearsal at the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. Salomea Kruszelnicka. An important place for Polish history is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where Jan Kazimierz made his famous vows during the Swedish invasion of 1656. The day spent in Lviv was an excellent history lesson.
On September 7, after waking up, toilets, breakfast and checking out, the group went to Olesko to visit the castle associated with the Sobieski and Rzewuski families. The castle’s collection includes valuable furniture, icons, sculptures and paintings. The next object on the route was the palace in Podhorce built for Hetman S. Koniecpolski, distinguished by a beautiful, extensive surroundings. The castle in Khotyn, a defensive structure situated on the high bank of the Dniester, is completely different in character. The undoubted benefit was that the students learned about various palace assumptions and architectural solutions. The next object on the route was the Pochayiv Lavra, during which the participants of the trip learned about the Orthodox religion. The stay in the monastery, located on a hill overlooking the town of Pochayiv, was an opportunity to get to know the richness of eastern sacred architecture. The arrival to Krzemieniec contributed to the broadening of literary knowledge (visiting the Slovak Museum, a walk to the Krzemieniec Secondary School), religious and artistic (parish church, Jesuit church – now an Orthodox church) and historical (castle ruins, Bona mountain). The group spent the next night at a hotel in Krzemieniec.
On the fourth day (Sunday), interested persons had the opportunity to participate in the mass. in the church of st. Stanisław Biskupa and Martyr, then the visitors went to Zbaraż. The fortress is connected with Polish history and literature. Her defense was described by Henryk Sienkiewicz. During the bus ride, students had the opportunity to watch the film adaptation of Fire and Sword. With a view to further sightseeing (Kamieniec Podolski), Mr. Wołodyjowski was also displayed. The group went from Zbaraż to the site of two important battles in 1621 and 1673 to the castle in Khotyn. A touching episode of the trip was the meeting with the 93-year-old Polish woman. The next stage was related to the Okopy św. Trinity. During the tour, the pilot, Dr. Piotr Rabiej, talked about the times of the Bar Confederation and about scenes from Z. Krasiński’s Nie-Boska Komedia. The last night of the trip was spent in Kamieniec Podolski, at the Kleopatra hotel.
In the morning, students saw the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul with a characteristic minaret, a monument to M. J. Wołodyjowski, city fortifications, and then went to the castle in Kamieniec Podolski. The last monument known in Ukraine were the fortifications of the castle in Złoczów. During the trip, the students filled in carefully prepared worksheets. The winners were awarded with souvenirs from the places they visited. After a long journey, crossing the border in Medyka, the trip ended in Krakow at ul. Wawrzyńca, next to the building of the VI High School.
The main goal of the trip was to get to know the cultural heritage of the Eastern Borderlands. It was possible to emphasize that the meaning of Kresy lies in the diversity and multiculturalism of the borderland. Students had the opportunity to reflect on the issue of intercultural dialogue, building interpersonal and international relations, and avoiding xenophobic, intolerant, nationalist and chauvinistic attitudes. The sense of healthy national pride was also emphasized, which can be built through learning about the achievements of great ancestors.
The route included objects related to Polish history (Żółkiew, Lwów, Olesko, Krzemieniec, Zbaraż, Chocim, Okopy Świętej Trójcy, Kamieniec Podolski). Seeing the architectural and urban complexes of old cities and fortresses broadened knowledge of the history of art and made it possible to notice the need to renovate monuments. The landscape values of the places on the route were not without significance.

Krakow-Zaragoza exchange 2019
7-14.09.2019
The end of the holidays, as well as the beginning of September, did not only mean the return to school reality. What we most waited for was the arrival of our Spanish friends, to whom we really wanted to show the hospitality of the Poles and the beauty of our city.
The first attraction that awaited them was the visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which impressed them greatly with its history and size.
Our Spanish companions each day of their stay in Krakow, knew more about Polish history, culture and customs. They visited the most prominent monuments such as Wawel, Sukiennice or Barbakan.
They also knew the saddest and most tragic part of history, by visiting the Schindler Factory Museum. They were very shocked to see the Auschwitz concentration camp with their own eyes, which despite not being something easy and pleasant, it was essential to see and know.
We worked very hard to make every moment of your time in Poland fun and special. After the morning visits to the city, many attractions awaited them, such as fun in a trampoline park, boat trip on the Vistula river etc.
We hope that the friendships made during the exchange will survive and one day we will meet again. Both the stay in Spain and in Poland have been a unique and unforgettable experience and I would recommend it for sure.

We are visiting in Spanish
On 09/23/2019, on the beautiful, sunny first day of autumn, the group of 2J2 Mrs. Eliza Koszyki went for a “Spanish walk” around the area where VILO is located.
The students, in pairs, prepared a description in Spanish of selected monuments of the Kazimierz district.
We started our tour at Szeroka Street and the Old Synagogue, which now houses the Historical Museum of Krakow.
We walked past the Ariel restaurant, the Jewish cemetery, the Remuh synagogue, the Jan Karski monument.
The objects that we usually pass every day on the way to school have acquired a different meaning,
we listened to the presentations prepared by the students with great interest.
Plac Nowy, the Galicia Museum are the next stops on our tourist route.
y perspectiva.
Integration trip Ic – 20/09/2019
On September 20 at 7.50am, class Ic gathered at the corner of ul. Dajwór and Miodowa to go to Wiśnicz. Of course, at the very beginning there were problems entitled “I do not embrace the streets of Krakow” and if not for the advice of those with any orientation in the field, the bus would depart without a significant part
Fortunately, everyone found themselves and the hour-long drive began. 2/3 of people fought for them not to float away into the land of eternal dreams, and the remaining 1/3 listened to the history of Wiśnicz with one ear, while the other one was allocated to listening to the story of a friend next door.
We got to Wiśnicz, where the temperature either
a) it fell 9 days and 9 nights like an anvil from heaven
or
b) it was the same as in Krakow, but we were spoiled by the heat of the bus.
And it was because of the cold that we started to integrate intensively. It is known that the best way to fight the frost is the warmth of another person, so we all started breaking the record for “Most people in a group hug”.
Visiting the castle fascinated the class, but some were drawn to things beyond the guide’s description, such as beautiful medieval fuses and sockets, or the art of instant self-portrait using a telephone and antique mirrors.
After leaving the palace and having a quick coffee, the class visited Jan Matejko’s mansion, who charmed the students with its history and beautiful, free-flowing peacocks.
The next point in the plan was a bonfire in Frankówka Mała. However, it wasn’t the sausages that caught the attention of the class, but the sunbeds. The discovery helped to realize the greatest dream of every high school student – an afternoon nap straight from kindergarten. We folded up in a circle surrounding the loudspeaker, not the fire, and the operation “Relax” began to move.
After a successful pseudo-nap (“pseudo”, because no one managed to fall asleep), it was time to eat. Sausages, bread, and marshmallows all at once (the former and the latter were in some cases more like coal than any food item).
Of course, no party-like event can do without dancing; Belgian started and YMCA ended. On the way, iconic pieces such as Macarena and Ducklings passed. Teenagers began to look more and more like the wild company at a Polish wedding.
Tired of dancing, VILOS returned to their recliners, where the idea to play the mafia was born. This idea lived a successful life and died surrounded by friends and gangsters. Then he was resurrected, because class Ic was liked by the mafia and they decided to play for the second time in the last 15 minutes before departure.
The return to Krakow was singing, literally. The art class is fond of chirping like nightingales (or for those with no musical talents: meowing like a cat complaining of lack of food despite a full bowl). The high school students came back a little bit more tired, maybe with a bit more torn throats – but also a bit more integrated and a bit happier.
SEPTEMBER WITH STUDENTS FROM BAD-NEUENAHR AHRWEILER
For two years now, the VI High School has had the great pleasure of working with a partner school in Bad – Neuenahr Ahrweiler. At the beginning of September, we hosted 14 students and their guardians from Peter Joerres Gymnsium in Krakow. The program in Poland included, among others, visiting the Old Town, Oświęcim and Wieliczka.
Just a few days later, we packed our bags and flew to a picturesque town near Cologne. Beautiful weather, river and school located in the park. Can it be better? During our one-week stay we saw Bonn, Cologne and Koblenz. We also had the opportunity to visit the local television station WDR, getting to know it “from the inside”. radio and television tricks. Something that made a great impression on us is the annual, traditional concert of the school Big Band! It is a great celebration for the school community, but also for the townspeople. It was a great job and great music!
Unfortunately, everything that is good ends quickly and it’s time to go back to our school walls. But we see you next year !!
MEETING OF ENGLISH TEACHERS AT THE RESIDENCE OF THE US CONSULATE GENERAL
On September 30, 2019, at the residence of the United States Consul General, Dr. Patrick T. Slowinski, there was a banquet for English teachers from Southern Poland. The host was accompanied by the Consul for Press and Culture, Amy Steinmann. The main topic of the meeting was the 15th anniversary of the publication of the magazine “Zoom in on America”. Among the guests, among the representatives of various schools and universities, was prof. Agnieszka Batko. As every year, the party created an opportunity to exchange experiences related to teaching English, maintain and establish contacts and promote High School No. 6. In the photo: US Consul General Dr. Patrick T. Slowinski.
1st class integration trip E – 26-27.09.2019
On September 26-27, class 1 E went on an integration trip to the Polish Tatra Mountains. On the first day, in good spirits, we set off on a hiking trip. Our route started from Kuźnice in Zakopane. After a long hike, we got to Polana Kalatówki, where there is a mountain hotel in the Tyrolean style, specific for our mountains. After a short rest, we moved on and after a while we reached Hala Kondratowa, where we saw the smallest Tatra shelter. Satisfied with ourselves, we went downstairs and went to our center, located in Murzasichle. Then we organized sausages and a photo session against the background of the majestic peaks of Kasprowy Wierch and Giewont. We ended the evening with a joint game of mafia and cards, as well as supporting the Polish team in the match against Slovenia at the European volleyball championship.
In the morning of the next day, refreshed, we competed in dodgeball and tug of war. At the end of the trip, the class went to a nearby viewpoint from which we could have a wonderful view of the mountains. The return journey was singing, as befits an art class.

Class 1c following the “Footsteps of the Legions” – 30/09/2019
On September 30, immediately after school, class Ic gathered at the entrance to the school to embark on a field game called “In the Footsteps of the Legions”. The students were divided into groups, which of course did not take place without any problems, because, as it should be for an art class, late arrivals came in waves.
Already in their respective teams, the students chose the leaders – these people were to perform an extremely difficult task that Heracles himself could not cope with … They had to pick up a pile of cards and bring it to their groups, preferably if it arrived undisturbed, but only in an ideal scenario. In this paper start, there were materials for the field game: a map (a rare sight these days), information about selected stations and empty boxes to be completed with a password.
And so the equipped young people set off into the wild area of Kazimierz, that is, from school to the tram stop, because it was this means of transport that everyone got to the market square. Nobody got lost in public transport (at least as far as I know), but if someone stayed on this tram, it would only be envied, because the weather outside was brutal. Wind, cold, and already on the market – rain. The umbrellas were bent and the scarves were thrown around their necks.
After explaining all the rules and what the game will look like, the hunt for commemorative plaques has begun. Everyone reached the first one, on the town hall tower, without any problems – after all, this is the market square, and even an American tourist will find his way here. It was a bit more difficult with the next one – getting to 9 Jagiellońska Street included a bit of shouting all over Krakow to help the lost.
The journey to the rest of the station was smooth and gave rise to interesting conversation about historical figures, burial sites and historical infatuations.
At Garncarska, the students took a commemorative photo with Piłsudski’s monument, but you can barely see him in this photo.
This photo captured the last moments before the high school students got fully wet. It began to rain as if the apocalypse was to come. Hardly anyone had rain clothes (despite the warnings and advice of teachers to take them with them) and still umbrellas for me. People were running, screaming, crying, but the villagers marched bravely, if bravely means also shouting and crying. Huddled under umbrellas, cold, soaked teenagers felt the real atmosphere of those times and the war.
Once the rain had stopped, the hunger had come. Wherever the students did not look, some restaurant tempted with a cheap, warm dinner. But they, unbroken, did not give in to the temptation and reached the end of the National Museum. There, they filled in these empty boxes and discovered the password, which was … Exactly. Passwords …. nobody remembers. But was it really that important? No. In the words of one of the students: “It is not the prize that counts, only the friends you have won along the way.” And in my opinion, we have got one quite nice friend – Józef Piłsudski.

Volunteers of Secondary School No. 6 for St. Łazarza in Krakow
On October 2, 2019, students of High School No. 6 took part in a cyclical action for the benefit of those in need from the St. Łazarza in Krakow. We started the campaign by collecting money, this time at ul. Floriańska and Szpitalna. The collection ended with a symbolic March of Hope, through the Krakow Market Square and the planting of daffodils on ul. Franciszkańska 3.
We would like to thank all the volunteers of the “six” for their exemplary attitude and commitment.

Sports and science camp class 2d through the eyes of students …
Our trip started around 6:00 am when the alarm clock sounded in 30 students’ homes. A quick breakfast, a morning toilet, put the last things in the suitcase and go to Galeria Kazimierz.
The bus set off as scheduled at 7:45, full of luggage, smiles and the students’ hopes for passing maths at least positively.
Immediately after their arrival (as befits math students), everyone was happy to go to an hour of maths, and then another … And maybe one more. The weather did not spoil us, but we bravely drew graph after graph. There was also physical activity – during the breaks between classes with Professor Gurdek and meals, we enthusiastically participated in team games and gyms. Mrs. Włodarczyk made sure that both the mind and body were in shape.
After an eight-hour sleep, the second day and another adventure with math has come! Colorful pens in hand, notebooks under the arm, tea for the other hand. The time has come for the next hours spent in the conference room and a meeting with the transformations of functions. You may think that after 6 hours of math your students will be fed up, but you don’t know 2d. Out of our sympathy for the Professor and our love of science, we even spent our free time on consultations and jointly doing planimetry tasks.
Our trip ended with a three-part test, which, as you can expect, everyone wrote with flying colors;) … Or at least to the best of their ability! After a three-hour effort, a warm dinner was waiting for us, and then unfortunately a return to the gray reality …
Certainly, the whole 2D class will remember the trip to Zakrzów for a long time.
The reportage was prepared by Małgosia Pawlik.

A walk in Kazimierz, class 1c – 7/10/2019
On October 7, 2019, class 1c went for a guided walk in the Jewish part of the Kazimierz district to get to know the area where she will spend most of her time in the next three years and that there would be no problem in the future “Where is the corner of Dajwór and Miodowa Streets ? “… During the walk, we visited the Old Synagogue, where we received a large dose of historical knowledge about the city of Kazimierz, the Jewish nation and its culture, customs and traditions, as well as Szeroka and Józefa Streets, where we learned about the history of some buildings. Passing by numerous restaurants and cafes, we found out what is kosher and what is treacherous. Finally, your guide prepared an urban game for us, during which we were looking for a menorah, mezuzah, mikvah and matzevot … Sounds mysterious? In that case, it’s high time to explore the secrets of Krakow’s Kazimierz. And finally – because our trip took place in the first week of the new year 5780 according to the Jewish calendar and on the eve of Yom Kippur – traditional wishes for the entire school community “May we be enrolled in a good year!”
Spanish language course in Salamanca – 5.10-12.10.2019
On October 5 this year, we set off for a Spanish language course in Spain, to Salamanca itself, a city included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list and a city that boasts the oldest university in Spain.
We were a large, 29-person representation of our school, from 11 grades, both second and third. At 20.30 we left the airport in Balice to arrive in Madrid around midnight, from where we traveled by coach to Salamanca. There, families with whom we stayed for the whole week of our stay were waiting for us. We spent the first day on a trip to Segovia – a city famous for its perfectly preserved aqueduct from Roman times and a beautiful royal castle, El Alcázar de Segovia. We stopped for a while next to the town of Ávila, where we were able to enjoy a wonderful view of this medieval city.
On Monday morning, classes at the MESTER Spanish language school started. We had grammar classes and conversation time each day. We had several teachers, all of them speaking only Spanish to us. In the afternoon, there were other activities in Spanish – a lecture on the history and art of Spain, a city tour – including numerous museums, a salsa course, a culinary lesson and a city game. It was a really wonderful week, full of learning and fun in true Spanish style! We would like to thank the teachers for perfect organization and the Mester school for the nice reception.

1h class integration trip – 3.10.2019
On October 3, 2019, a class 1h integration trip took place. Students, Spanish teachers Justyna Sobuś, Victor Madrid, together with their tutor Anna Kwiecińska – Chmiel, went to Frankówka. There were many attractions waiting on the spot. The caregivers with the pupils joined forces in making dumplings, gaining a considerable result of 380 pieces. Between eating more home-made products, integration games appeared, which brought students and teachers even closer. There were also warm conversations and cooking by the fire.
All participants left Frankówka with a smile on their faces, richer in new experiences and ready to cooperate for the next 3 years.
Ig integration trip – October 22-23, 2019
After the first days, the first stresses, the first conversations, the joint search for classes (not always successful ..), what were we missing? Of course, an integration trip! We started planning and thinking, which lasted and lasted, until finally we politely agreed to the proposal of our tutor, Mr. Mikrut, who deserves thanks for not giving up due to the frequency of changing plans to the place of departure – from Szczawnica to Wrocław.
On October 22, we went to Korzkiew, to a charming resort in the autumn scenery of fallen leaves. We started the integration with a field game, although probably everyone was waiting for the evening to sit in the rooms and integrate on our own, as it happens on every trip. Sports souls also had the opportunity to live up to the next fun, which we all remember under the sign of disheveled hair and clothes sunk in the mud. After all, “a dirty child is a happy child,” right?
We fell into a small pizza-making workshop with a very nice chef, who had a nervous breakdown looking at some of our excesses, because as it turned out, “the ingredients cannot touch each other”. Like an ordinary integration trip, but almost a course with Magda Gessler.
On that day, there were also sports games in which our guardians played the first violin, and our teacher is a real Lewandowski! Maybe he could even compete with Ms Korpak and her achievements.
Apparently, nothing integrates as well as the “good old” fireplace we arranged in the evening. We talked about every possible topic, including turbulent political topics, all very culturally of course! Well, maybe the “mat-geo-wos” class already has …
And finally, the time has come for the long-awaited “peace integration” and we hope that we were not a salt in the eye for our guardians, even when they peeked into our cavity and visited us … This evening could be endless, but our guardians made sure that we split up to their rooms and culturally survived until morning. Thank you for that, of course!
On Wednesday, we had card shows in the common room, which was not always liked by the wonderful hostess of the Center, but she bravely endured it despite one dispute over the cups …
We spent the rest of our free time at “table football” and pool, and Mrs. Kukla fought with us.
After lunch, we all felt the time to come back and a slight nostalgia hovering in the air, even though we spent only two days together.
I think that we have a really great class and that we will be able to go somewhere together, but this time for a longer time, and we would like to thank our tutors!
1hp class integration trip – October 21, 2019
On October 21, 2019, a class 1H integration trip took place.
Students and teachers of Eliza Cart and Maciej Gruca went to Frankówka.
Together, we made 300 dumplings, and together we solved the Historical Quest about World War I. There were also integration games and a common fire.
All participants left Frankówka satisfied.
Meeting with Daryl Davis – October 21, 2019
On Monday, October 21, courtesy of the Directorate of I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Bartłomiej Nowodworski in Krakow, students of our school had the opportunity to take part in a meeting with Daryl Davis, organized by the US Consulate in Krakow. Daryl Davis from Chicago is a pianist and vocalist who performs the music of Boogie-woogie and Blues, but the meeting was largely devoted to his non-musical activities, aimed mainly at counteracting racism and hatred between people of different races. The lecture he gave in the form known, among others, from TED Talks, was highly inspiring and certainly contributed to broadening our horizons in socio-political and historical matters.

Tribute to the victims of the public execution on October 28, 1943.
On October 28, 2019, teachers and students of Secondary School No. 6 commemorated thirty Poles shot by the German police at the wall of the Old Synagogue at ul. Wide. It was one of the many mass executions by which the occupier wanted to force Polish society to submission. For six years, our school has been taking care of the monument commemorating the victims of this crime.
On the 76th anniversary of the execution, headmaster Iwona Fedan, teachers and students of classes 2A2, 2A3 and 2G1, representing the community of our school, paid tribute to the murdered. A prayer for the dead was said by Fr. Przemysław Soboń, parish priest of the Corpus Christi parish. The representatives of District I Council: Mr. Tomasz Daros (chairman of District I Council, City Councilor of Kraków), Mr. Jacek Balcerzak and Mr. Maciej Wicherek participated in the memorial of the victims.
